WebTech Wireless Volvo S40 Achieves 24% Reduction in Fuel Consumption

October 10th, 2008

The 2008 MPG Marathon has concluded and the Volvo S40 saloon entered jointly by WebTech Wireless and Lysanda, achieved an impressive 24% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the manufacturer's (Volvo's) stated mileage figures.

The Volvo and its crew of ex-Top Gear presenter Chris Goffey and David Coates, Sales Manager of Lysanda, performed flawlessly, as did the S40, and proved that over a varied course of 400 miles through English towns, industrial estates and countryside, that real and measurable improvements in fuel economy and CO2 emissions can be realised.

Stay tuned for a more detailed analysis of the race and its results on this site. Some information is already available on the MPG Marathon's website and Blog.

WebTech Wireless has come together with Essex-based engineering consultancy Lysanda to develop an innovative way of measuring a vehicle’s real-time fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, helping drivers and fleet managers instantly improve their fuel economy by up to 20% and monitor CO2 emissions on the move. This technology will be demonstrated at this year’s MPG Marathon, October 8th thru 9th – the UK’s premier economy driving event.

The MPG Marathon champions fuel efficient vehicles and driving techniques and is divided into categories for cars according to CO2 output, with separate classes for petrol, diesel and commercial vehicles. Prizes will be awarded to individual class winners and the most efficient vehicle overall, as well as the driver that delivers the most improvement in percentage terms over their car’s official combined cycle fuel economy figures during the 400-mile journey.

A WebTech Wireless Locator™, capturing and transmiting live GPS location and vehicle performance data via a cellular network, is paired with Lysanda’s Eco-Log™ engine diagnostic device, which captures real-time fuel usage and CO2 emissions data. Using a web-based application, this data can be viewed online or through customizable printed reports.

Fitted to an otherwise standard Volvo S40 D5 saloon and transmitting data every minute, stage by stage, via a live feed to websites covering the Marathon, the system will identify where and how driver behaviour affects vehicle performance. The Volvo will be driven by ex-Top Gear presenter Chris Goffey and David Coates, Sales Manager of Lysanda, and will be competing in the 160g/km of CO2 and over class.

The results of the MPG Marathon will be of particular interest to anyone concerned with reducing fuel costs – both for passenger cars or commercial vehicles – as it can be fitted to most production vehicles without any modification. It’s a system that works across a variety of vehicles such as cars, vans, trucks, buses and coaches and, of course, the savings and benefits increase with fleet size.

Participation in this event underscores WebTech Wireless' commitment to our ‘Telematics for the Planet’ initiatives, which encompass numerous technological applications aimed directly at reducing vehicle emissions.
