Government
As a government fleet manager, you can find yourself needing to meet high public demand for services while maintaining accountability of where your vehicles are and what drivers are doing with them. You need a solution to improve visibility into fleet usage—optimize routes, decrease excessive idling, and reduce mileage.
Webtech Wireless is the fleet management solution of choice for more than 600 government organizations, including the City of Chicago, Port of Long Beach, Port of Los Angeles, and the City and County of San Francisco.
“The large amount of data that the system is now providing gives us so much information on what’s happening out on the street and we can use it in so many ways. We’re working with Webtech Wireless to add more telemetry inputs that will give us more detailed information on the efficiency of our crews, the condition of our vehicles, and generally whether we’re meeting a neighborhood’s needs.”

Case Study: Control over Costs and Accountability
Challenge
With one of North America’s largest Streets and Sanitation departments, the City of Chicago found itself in an embarrassing situation when residents began photographing city trucks parked under bridges for hours while the workers idled in the shade. When the media started running stories implying government incompetence the situation was escalated (and the mayor stepped in), and the Department found itself cleaning up more than just streets—it had a public relations crisis on its hands. The city urgently needed a solution to improve visibility into fleet usage. It needed to optimize routes, decrease excessive idling, and reduce mileage.
Solution
Initially, the Department chose to install Webtech Wireless Locators in a number of the Department’s snow plows and dump-trucks. They collaborated with Webtech Wireless’ Professional Services Group to customize the city’s existing map data to integrate with the city’s fleet management system.
Quadrant provided the Department with a single interface for accessing the full range of information available to the city, including the location of each snow removal vehicle, its direction, and its speed.
"By transmitting location data on every turn of the vehicle, rather than at specific time intervals as is typical in the industry, city officials receive information that demonstrates actual routes taken rather than a visual representation of vehicles traveling 'as the crow flies'.”
Proof
With the success of the Webtech Wireless Locators in snow plows and dump trucks, the Department soon realized added efficiencies and improvements in four key areas:
-
Improved accountability
-
Reduced fuel costs
-
Increased customer satisfaction
-
Lowered CO2 emissions
As with many Webtech Wireless implementations, companies often introduce Webtech Wireless technology to address one challenge and later, flushed with success, find application for it elsewhere.
“I hope to see a day when all of our vehicles are equipped with a Webtech Wireless Quadrant solution.”
